ABRSM to launch new Creative Musicianship qualifications in April 2026
The UK music exam board ABRSM is preparing to launch a new suite of Creative Musicianship qualifications aimed at learners who create their own music, with the first two levels due to begin rolling out from April and May 2026.
The new qualifications will be offered in three subjects – Composing, Music Production and Songwriting – and are designed to support a broad range of creators working in any genre, with any instrument, voice or digital tools. ABRSM says the new pathway has been created to be flexible and inclusive, giving learners structured progression while recognising creative work in a wider range of musical practices.
Introducing and Beginner level specifications are due to be published at the end of April 2026, with assessments for those levels becoming available worldwide at the end of May. Intermediate and Advanced levels are expected to follow in 2027.
Assessment will be based on a submitted portfolio of creative work rather than a live exam. Learners will complete a series of creative tasks and provide supporting evidence showing how their ideas developed. From Beginner level onwards, portfolios will also include early drafts. Booking and submission will be handled online.
Subject to confirmation, the qualifications will be regulated in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, with levels mapped to the Regulated Qualifications Framework. ABRSM has also indicated that an Advanced pass or above will carry UCAS points for higher education applications in the UK.
ABRSM says the qualifications are intended for learners of all ages, backgrounds and levels of experience, with no entry requirements and worldwide availability.
