RSCM appoints Christopher Sparkhall as new Chief Examiner
The Royal School of Church Music has appointed Christopher Sparkhall as its new Chief Examiner for Singing Awards. He will take up the role on 13 January 2026.
Sparkhall brings extensive senior-level experience in examining, moderation and assessment design. He is a senior examiner for GCSE and A level Music and has served as an ABRSM examiner for the past 18 years. Alongside his examining work, he is an experienced singer, conductor and ARCO organist.
He spent nearly 20 years until August 2024 as Director of Music at Canford School, where he led a large and successful department with consistently strong outcomes. His work there included directing chapel and chamber choirs – with the chapel choir numbering around 80 singers – as well as leading a wide range of ensembles from choral societies to jazz bands.
Commenting on his appointment, Sparkhall said, ‘I have extensive experience as an examiner and music educator, and I am motivated by a passion for supporting and developing musicians through clear, fair and inspiring assessment. I am a passionate advocate for choral singing, and I am committed to helping singers of all ages and backgrounds find confidence and joy in performance.’
He added that he looks forward to supporting the RSCM’s work in building foundations for singers’ future progress and success as the Singing Awards continue to develop.
