Charles Weaver appointed lecturer in music at Yale
Dr Charles Weaver will join the Yale Institute of Sacred Music and Yale School of Music in autumn 2026, bringing expertise as a scholar, lutenist, singer, conductor and church musician.
In the role, Dr Weaver will coach ISM graduate vocal students in early music, oratorio and chamber ensemble, and teach courses in the repertoire and performance practice of vocal music from the early modern period. He will also perform in special projects during the academic year.
Dr Weaver holds a PhD in music theory and analysis from the City University of New York. His research interests include the rhythm of Gregorian chant and the history of the theory of harmony. He is also a lutenist, singer, conductor and church musician, and serves as editor of the journal Sacred Music.
His publications have appeared in Études grégoriennes, Theoria, Music & Letters and the Journal of the American Musicological Society. As a performer, he has appeared with the New York Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra and Minnesota Orchestra.
Dr Weaver has also served as assistant conductor for Juilliard Opera and has worked on opera productions at the University of Maryland, Cleveland Institute of Music, Princeton University and Yale. He is a member of Quicksilver Baroque Ensemble, and has performed with Piffaro, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the Folger Consort, Apollo’s Fire and Blue Heron.
He is currently on the music faculty at the Juilliard School, where he teaches historical performance, and is director of music at St Mary’s Catholic Church in Norwalk, Connecticut.
